Unit4

This unit focuses on teenagers' relationship with the media and digital technology. You will explore your media habits, discuss how you use them and consider the advantages as well as the risks you might face using digital communication.Through the use of all 4 language skills you will develop related vocabulary, express your opinion and learn how to use digital media in a responsible way.

By the end of the activity you will be able to:

  • Describe teenagers' digital habits
  • interpret simple survey results
  • give advice using should, shouldn't, must, mustn't
  • Write and revise a collaborative wiki text
  • Give respectful feedback
  • Use digital sourses responsibly

PHASE 1: THINK AND VOTE

In order to create a campaign based on real class data, you have to vote on one of the following statements. Vote the one closer to your class reality.undecided Remember! winkyou have to justify your opinion. 

"How digital is our daily life?"

1. I check my phone as soon as I wake up.

2. I use social media every day to chat with my friends and watch videos.

3.I often do my homework online and search for information on the internet.

PHASE 2: COMPLETE THE SURVEY (20 minutes)

You have to answer anonymously the questionnaire

PHASE 3: ANALYSE THE RESULTS (30 minutes)

Our questionnaire results need to be analysed. For this you will be divided in 5 different groups and each group will study a different category of results.

Group ALPHA will study " screen time".

Group BETA will study "social media".

Group GAMMA will study"information".

Group DELTA  will study "sleep" and 

Group EPSILON will study the use of social media for studying and entertainment.

When you join the group you have to assign each member a role.

  • Data Analyst: Studies the survey results
  • Writer: Writes the main text
  • Language editor: checks vocabulary and grammar
  • Source checker: Checks the reliability and copyright
  • Wiki editor: Organises and publishes the final page

When you finish up with the result analysis and interpretation each group has to complete the following Analysis paper.

After completing the worksheet write three(3) statements in english describing the data and one (1) conclusion statement.

PHASE 4: CREATE AND REVISE YOUR WIKI ( 45 minutes)

Create your group Wiki page, revise it after peer feedback and submit the final Wiki link through the assignment tool.

The time refers to the Wiki drafting not the assignement completion.

Dear students,

join the groups you were assigned and create a wiki. Each group develops a wiki connected to the result analysis you have already studied. Afrer you finish the editing your Wiki pages you should submit the final version here. Don't forget to accompany your assignment with a short paragraph explaining how your 1st draft changed and why.

Before you publish your wiki please use the checklist below. You are advised to read the document about Wiki editing.

Which online activities do they use for entertainment? Does entertainment sometimes distract students from homework? How can teenagers organise their digital time effectively? 3. After each group finishes with its wiki please publish the link in the forum following. 

PHASE 5: PEER FEEDBACK (15 minutes)

Wiki Gallery and Peer Feedback

In this forum each group should publish the link to their wiki. Students should visit at least two of the wikis and leave a comment based on specific criteria, "One strength-One Suggestion".

Your comments should base on the criteria below.

  • The clarity of the message
  • The use of survey findings
  • The usefulness of the advice
  • The organisation of the Wiki
  • The accuracy of the language
  • The responsible use of sources and images

The wiki creator group should reply to at least one of the comments explaining how the particular suggestion could be helpful to improve their wiki.
